Since Colonial Times one could see the differences between the regions of the North and the South. They were two different worlds! It is the obvious differences the South was agricultural and thrived!
Their whole society revolved around agriculture! First tobacco and then cotton that became King Cotton! They had slave labor and society approved of it! While the North was industrial and had a diversified economy! Historians always looked at the differences as advantages and disadvantages. One really sees it played out in the Civil War!
Ultimately the North had the advantage, and by 1863 after the Battle of Gettysburg (The Tide of the War) the South will not be able to recoup!
