Buffallo Soldiers

The big reason I love History, and the reason I am a History teacher is because of Grandpa.  He was a college History professor for many years.  Growing up he would always discuss History with us, and it must have stuck.  I love HISTORY!!!  I am so proud to post that my grandfather is the author of this book above.  He was inspired by this subjuect matter because he served in one of the last all black infantries during the Korean War.  This was before they desegragated the US Military.  Of course he served as a white officier, but he saw first hand how they were treated by the US and civilians.  So when he was done with his duty, he went back for his Phd.  He had to write about something, and he had the perfect topic!  Here is a review of his book:

The Black Infantry in the West, 1869-1891, by Arlen L. Fowler, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, 1996, $12.95 paperback.
Arlen Fowler's interest in the "buffalo soldiers" grew out of his 1952 assignment as a white officer in the 25th Armored Infantry Battalion, the last remnant of the all black 25th Infantry Regiment. Fowler became a firsthand witness to the prejudices and outright discrimination that still existed; his research showed that such attitudes and practices could be traced back to the organization of the first six black regiments (two cavalry and four infantry) between the summers of 1866 and 1867.

Fowler meticulously documents the black infantry's service through military records, personal letters and newspaper accounts from the 1860s through 1890s. Black regiments served in the harshest environments, fought Indians throughout the West and drew the most monotonous duties. Even so, their alcoholism and desertion rates ranked among the lowest. (At times white truancy reached 20 to 50 percent higher than black truancy.) Commanders, reporters and other eyewitnesses noted the black units' valor in battle, but most officers continued to consider it a blot on their record to serve with blacks or took a lower rank in order to serve in a white outfit, George Armstrong Custer among them.

This book offers fascinating insights into the struggles and pride of the black regiments. As William H. Leckie, author of The Buffalo Soldiers, states in the new foreword to this 1996 edition (hardcover edition printed by Greenwood Publishing Group, 1971), "Fowler's book is still essential reading for a comprehensive understanding of the role of the black infantry on the expanding western frontier."

Visit Italy

I was called to make a post about Italy.  I wanted to highlight this mesmerizing country!  I have had the great honor of visiting four times!  And I would go back!  I have never spent a long time there.  All of my trips have been tours.

This country is worth a visit!  If nothing else the food! The food is so good!  It will make you look at Italian Restaurants differently!  They cannot compare to the real thing!  Here are pics of two meals I had in Italy.  The first is a photo of gnocchi in Florence.  It is a potato pasta and so delicious!  The second is bruschetta in Rome.  This was the BEST bruschetta I have ever had!

Italy is a fashion capital of the world!  So ladies you can do some GREAT shopping!  Here is a store window I took a photo of on the Isle of Capris.

The best part of going to Italy is the ruins!  You go to these places that are thousands of years old.  You can feel the history!  When you walk around the Roman Coliseum you can't but help to feel where you are!  I kept touching the walls - so I knew I was there!  Another spot you need to go is Pompeii.  This is an ancient Roman city that is intact!  In 79 C.E. it was destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius (a volcano) It was covered by 100 feet of volcanic ash.  I cannot imagine what that must of been like, but you get to walk around this ancient city, and see what it looked like!

I was trying to be artsy!  I am very proud of this photo!

Pompeii with the volcano in the background!

Isle of Capris.  So beautiful!  Jay Z and BeyoncĂ© vacation here!

You can see famous artwork - The David, The Birth of Venus, and the Sistine Chapel.

I took this photo looking up!

One of the best movies about Italy is Roman Holiday.  Watch it - you'll want to go!

Flocabulary

This is a GREAT tool!  I heard about this from another teacher, and had to share!  With all the technology out there - you have so many resources at your fingertips!  The internet alone has a plethora of resources, but you must be driven!  Driven to search out these resources!  This quality will help you stand out in life, and will be impressive!

If you are struggling in a subject - search out help!  Whether it is a tutor, another book, or a YouTube video.  When the Supreme Court Justice came in the Fall that is one thing she addressed.  She talked about Physics being a struggle.  So what did she do?  She went to the library and found a book that explained Physics in a different way.  In a way she understood!  That shows initiative and drive!

These are your grades!  Do not let a difficult subject stop you, or prevent you from striving for excellence!

A great site to help with a struggle is Flocabulary.  They take almost every subject, and use hip hop and rap to review a topic.  I think it is brilliant!  And could be really useful!  They are using different strategies to help students get it!

You can also search for their videos on YouTube.  To give you an idea here is a video from them.  In World History we are covering the Industrial Revolution, and I showed my students this video.

Everybody Has A Story

I was posting Everybody Has A Story with Steve Hartman, but that got replaced by On The Road Again with Steve Hartman.  This weeks episode will make you cry!  I cried! I always cry!  I wish everyone is like this little boy!  It is a GREAT message!  And I truly believe if you are blessed in your life - you MUST share that blessing!  Give back!  Pay it forward!  What would this world be like if we all were like that!

Oklahoma Words

I just saw this article on Facebook, and thought I had to share!  This article takes words that mean one thing to the rest of the world, but something completely different to Oklahoma.  When you read these you will see the truth.  It is a fun read!
