This Day In History

25 Sept, 2003 France Heat Wave

2003 : As the heat wave comes to an end in France the Health Ministry confirms that nearly 15,000 had died from the extreme temperatures (7 days with 40 °C / 104 °F or more recorded) in August with most of those being the elderly. Due to the extreme temperatures and the fact that most homes and retirement homes are not equipped with air conditioning. August is traditionally the month when many people, including government ministers and physicians, are on vacation and many of the elderly are left to fend for themselves in homes that were not suitable for that type of weather.
