Arkansas governor Orval Faubus enlists the National Guard to prevent nine African American students from entering Central High School in Little Rock on September 4, 1957. The armed troops surround the school, while an angry crowd of some 400 whites jeer, boo and threaten to lynch the frightened Black teenagers, who flee shortly after arriving.
