Life Lessons

We are currently studying the American Civil War and Reconstruction.  One of my favorite parts about the Civil War are the Life Lessons  one can find.

First is the Emancipation Proclamation

President Lincoln's #1 Goal was to preserve the Union.  In his first Inaugural Address he made clear he would not free the slaves.  That was the biggest fear of the South - A Republican would free the slaves.  But once the Civil War started President Lincoln decided the government must free the slaves.  It becomes the 2nd Principle Cause.

As soon as the War began - he wrote the Emancipation Proclamation.  Here is the Life Lesson - Patience.  President Lincoln waited for a large Union Victory.  That came with  the Battle of Antietam.  He waited Two Long Years to introduce it.

The final lesson is at Gettysburg.

I showed my classes a scene from Rembert the Titans.  I think it is a favorite scene for history teachers, and as I watched it 6 times - I realized this is a life lesson of Unity.  We must come together - people have fought and died for unity.  So here is the scene to speak for itself!
